Winter has settled over the Pacific Northwest. This means short, wet days and a completely different attitude to picture taking.

Before thanksgiving we headed out to the Baker Snoqualmie National Forest with GFX. this was the first time in inclement weather with the camera. I am not sure what ‘weather sealed’ means, but I am quite sure the GFX exceeded specifications on this day. It rained quite heavily a number of times. Two thumbs up for the GFX weather sealing – the camera was soaked and never had a chance to dry in

Tips for photographing in the winter months:

  • Its an attitude adjustment. I like to say that Pictures are not taken, they are Given. This time of year, be ready for what is given.
  • The days are short! The sun sets shortly after 4 even now and its dark by 3:00.
  • Almost every shot is going to be long exposure shot because it is never vey light.
  • The rain and wet creates a lot of specular highlights – polarizers are really critical to getting a good negative to work with.
  • I did bring an umbrella to keep the camera as dry as possible.
  • Some nice chamois to dry things off with are very useful.
  • Waterproof boots – yes!

Get out there and shoot. There is beauty in the rain and the fog
